A Sense of Wonder
Sunday, July 25th - Friday, July 30, 2010
Sagamore National Historic Landmark, Raquette Lake, NY
“A child’s world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. It is our misfortune that for most us that clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring, is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood.”
The Sense of Wonder by Rachel Carson
The cardinals are calling. Did you pause to wonder what the song was communicating or did the sound go unnoticed somewhere in the recesses of your busy cluttered mind? Martha, the seven year old student exclaimed, “I found another garnet stone! Now I have six!” Hmmm. Had I dismissed the beauty of the deep red garnet as I grumbled about the pebbles in my shoes? My art room routinely grows quiet when the primary students put paint to paper, their attention fully focused on the process. What will happen when the yellow paint slowlyblends into the wet blue puddle? “I made green!” rings out across the room in a joyous chorus. What happens to that all consuming sense of wonder? Does the yearning to know die slowly, suffocated by peer pressure, loud music, TV, cell phones, the daily to-do lists? How can we, as teachers and artists, keep that sense of wonder alive? How can we nurture our students? Enthusiasm is the energy that carries us through the task before us effortlessly. Curiosity is the drive that gives us courage to risk doing the unfamiliar and unknown. This professional development week offers hands-on workshops based on the NY State Learning Standards as well as stimulating discussions. Experience the sense of wonder first hand as we create metal sculpture, re-discover book making and its many roles, experience woodcarving, Korean wind chimes, dream catchers, pin hole photography and finally, learn how to write grants to support your engaging programs in your schools.
Our talented staff includes Valerie Carrigan, professional book artist, David J. Woodward, artist blacksmith, Outdoor Education Assoc.’s Wayne Fisher, & George Steele, and our own, Leslie Hanes, Lisa Langway, Robin O’Neill-Gonzalez, Michelle Schroder, and Mary Brodersen.
The Adirondack Mountains provide a perfect setting for a week of total immersion. Sagamore also presents informative educational tours, 20 miles of hiking trails, a beautiful lake for swimming, with many nearby museums and galleries. Sleeping accommodations are in beautiful authentic historic buildings. This national landmark dating from 1897, built by W.W. Durant, was the summer retreat of the Alfred G. Vanderbilt family for over 50 years. Buffet style meals are prepared by Sagamore's chef and served in the paneled dinning hall that overlooks Sagamore Lake (see www.sagamore.org).
