NYSATA Winter Institute 2010

We’re back at Ashokan for a warm and wonderful workshop weekend focused on a variety of printmaking and print related workshops. Join us for the four day intensive, with an option for earning in-service credit! The workshop descriptions follow. It’s difficult to choose, but each participant can only take one workshop for the entire weekend.
Housing is dormitory style, with separate facilities for men and women. Dormitories are well heated and comfortable. We begin with registration and snacks on Friday evening (dinner is not included on Friday) followed by an evening presentation. Instruction will begin after breakfast on Saturday morning. We will break for lunch and continue in workshops until dinner. Culinary Institute of America-trained Chef Michael will create a selection of tempting and healthy meal choices. After dinner, participants can continue to” work on their own” or socialize. There is a wood fired sauna on the campus. Sunday’s schedule is approximately the same as Saturday’s. Clean-up and setting up a “gallery” ends the evening on Sunday. On Monday, following breakfast, we will share the work we have produced. Departure is prior to lunch on Monday morning.
Directions, personal packing information, and additional workshop supply requirements will be sent as soon as registration is received. Space is limited, so register early to reserve your spot! We try to keep these workshops small to make this a really unique opportunity to learn in a close community of artists.
In-Service credit, endorsed by NYSATA, is available for an optional additional fee. Credit is based on the number of instructional hours included in the workshop (22.5 hours=1.5 credits). We also provide an extra component for curriculum development, which is based on lesson plans submitted after the workshop (7.5 hours=.5 credit). A maximum of 2 credits is available for the Ashokan workshop. The fee for in-service credit is $50 per credit. Be sure to check with your district for prior approval. If you are interested in In-Service credit, indicate it on your registration form, and you will be e-mailed all of the necessary supporting information to submit to your school district. Fees for In-service credit can be paid for on-site, or mailed in after the workshop when supporting evidence is submitted.

WORKSHOP 1—SOLARPLATE—ACIDLESS ETCHING with Dan Welden
Our favorite East End artist, Master Printmaker, and friend of NYSATA encouraged us to bring the Ashokan experience back because it is such an amazing place to learn, work, and collaborate. Developed by Dan, Solarplate utilizes UV light and ordinary tap water, instead of acids, solvents and grounds. The Solarplate is a polymer printing plate that accepts all kinds of images including drawings on acetate, photocopies and digital images on transparency film. Participants may also create directly on the Solarplate matrix and have the capability of producing many images in relief or intaglio. Glass will also be made available for artists wishing to draw on location. Two Solarplates, inks, and 2 sheets of paper will be included. A materials list will be sent when registration is received. Additional supplies will be on hand for purchase during the workshop.

WORKSHOP 2—MONOTYPE PRINTMAKING with Beth Atkinson
Our own NYSATA Art Educator of the Year and sought-after workshop presenter, Beth Atkinson will be presenting this engaging workshop. A monotype is a “one of a kind” print that is non-editionable. This workshop will explore monotype using both additive and subtractive methods using Akua inks. Akua inks are soy based inks which clean up with soap and water, have an even longer working time than oil based inks, and are far less toxic. Participants will develop their own personal imagery which can be further enhanced using a variety of different mediums. Inks and 5 sheets of paper are included. Plexi plates will be available for use on-site. A materials list will be sent when registration is received. Additional supplies will be on hand for purchase during the workshop. WORKSHOP 3—DIGITAL FRESCO AND TRANSFER TECHNIQUES with Sandy Carrion
Art educator, professional photographer (not to mention Yoga instructor), Sandy Carrion will introduce a series of innovative digital photo printing processes. This workshop will explore how to transfer inkjet transparencies to new receptor surfaces. The Digital Fresco produces beautiful results reminiscent of artworks done on plaster. The other transfer techniques use simple non-toxic ingredients that yield results similar to the Polaroid film transfer. Using a variety of materials such as gelatin, gel medium, and hand sanitizer; learn how to create a stand-alone artwork, or use any of the techniques as starting points for paintings, drawings or monotypes at a later date. Participants are required to bring 10-15 digital files on a CD or jump drive made to the following specs: flattened jpegs, 300 dpi, 8” longest dimension. The workshop will include two pieces of wood for the fresco, 2 pieces of Arches 88 for the transfers (8x10), and 5 transparencies for printing image files. A materials list will be sent when registration is received. Additional supplies will be on hand for purchase during the workshop. hblad@aol.com Max enrollment: 12
WORKSHOP 4--BOOKBINDING: Artist's Books with Gregory Santos
Gregory Santos has worked professionally as a letterpress printer, bookbinder, book conservator, lithographer, and fine art silkscreen printer. He joins us for an introductory course that will familiarize students with several basic styles of bookbinding. Students will make various book structures including a single-signature pamphlet binding, a multi-signature "flat back" case binding, accordion, coptic, and Japanese sewing patterns. The instruction of proper binding techniques will include discussions of materials (paper, board, adhesives, book cloth, etc.), techniques (folding, sewing, gluing, etc.), tricks of the trade, and the do's and don'ts of bookbinding. From these Binding 101 lessons students will then be able to expand what they've learned to create unique artist books at home. No binding experience is required, but an art background and knowledge of art materials is helpful. Binder’s board, binder’s thread, binder’s needles, generic paper, glue/paste, and newsprint will be provided. A supply list will be forwarded when registration is received. Additional supplies will be on hand for purchase during the workshop. gregorysantos@hotmail.com Max enrollment: 15
