An important aspect of NYSATA's mission is to provide opportunities for students to pursue higher education in the visual arts. There are four scholarships awarded yearly.

The Zara B. Kimmey Scholarship, named for a founding member of NYSATA, and the Bill Milliken Scholarship, named for a long-time representative of Binney and Smith, have enabled many students to help purchase supplies and supplement tuition. These one year awards were established in honor of two NYSATA members who provided exemplary service to the field of art education. Zara B. Kimmey was the founder of NYSATA and the first Art Education Associate in the New York State Education Department. Bill Milliken, a Vendors' representative on the NYSATA board encouraged generous support for art education from the manufacturers and distributors of art materials.

Two new scholarships have been recently added. The Elaine Goldman and Aida Snow Scholarships were generously endowed by Ms. Snow and Ms. Goldman. Elaine is a retired LIATA/Nassau member who continues to participate at the regional level, and is a frequent presenter at the state conference. Regretfully Aida Snow has passed away but has enabled us to help visual art students in New York State to pursue their dream. In addition to their willingness to share their time, talent and expertise with colleagues, they are helping students to follow in their footsteps!

Our newest scholarship, added in 2008, is the Barry W. Hopkins Award. Barry taught Art in the Catskill Central School District for 37 years. He had a passion for teaching and for sharing his love of the Hudson River School of Art and the Catskill Mountains. An active and contributing NYSATA member for as many years, he gave endless numbers of workshops, chaired conferences, and contributed to and participated in the NYSATA summer institute since itŐs conception. His positive influence in the art world lives on through the many lives he touched and will also continue through this scholarship.
NYSATA administers the three scholarships for high school students: the $1000 Zara B. Kimmey Award; the $500 Bill Milliken Award; and three $500 scholarships, the Aida Snow/Elaine Goldman Award, and the Barry W. Hopkins Award.

These scholarships are open to any graduating senior who is a student of a NYSATA member, intends to pursue a career in visual arts, and has been accepted by an art school or college art program. The award is presented at the annual NYSATA convention in November of each year. Winning students and their parents or guardians are invited to the awards ceremony as guests of the Association. For students who cannot attend the ceremony, other arrangements are made for payment of the awards.

Scholarship winners are determined by a committee composed of NYSATA members of the Student Scholarship committee. The Zara B. Kimmey scholarship will be awarded to the student in first place, while the Bill Milliken, Aida Snow/Elaine Goldman scholarshipBarry W. Hopkins scholarship will be awarded to the students who are in second place. Criteria for winning the awards will be based on demonstration of commitment to the visual arts; development of a personal voice or vision; and evidence of mastery of the visual arts elements and principles in a range of media.
