Inspire

New York State Art Teachers Association 75th Annual Conference
November 17-19, 2023 • Crowne Plaza (formerly the Desmond) • Albany, NY

in•spire (ĭn-spīr′) transitive verb1
1. to exert a stimulating, enlivening, or animating effect on; to spur on, impel, motivate; to invigorate
2. to instigate; to give rise to, stir, bring to action; to influence, move, or guide
3. to bring about, incite; to draw forth or bring out
4. to spread by indirect means or through the agency of another
5. to inhale; to breathe or blow into or upon; to infuse (something, such as life) by breathing2

Inspiration awakens us to new possibilities by allowing us to transcend our ordinary experiences and limitations. It propels us from apathy to a heightened awareness of possibility, and transforms the way we perceive our own capabilities.3  We all know someone who inspires us. From family members to famous artists to renown leaders, there are those who fill us with enthusiasm and make us want to do more with our lives. But what does it take to inspire others?

In a school culture obsessed with measuring achievement through test scores, art educators look deeper to see students as human. They share joy, motivation, and enthusiasm; they understand how the healing power of art can cultivate students’ connectedness to self, others, and the world. They recognize that inspiration can be activated; and it can have a major effect on student outcomes, providing both the means and the motivation to rise above, be creative, approach goals with positivity, learn from others, and achieve enhanced well-being.4

PROPOSE A WORKSHOP

INPIRE is the theme of the 2023 NYSATA Conference.
NYSATA seeks workshop proposals that inspire art educators to maintain their own creative and social-emotional health, grow their artistic and educational practice, and exert a positive and motivational influence through their interactions with colleagues, students, families, student teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, college faculty, museum educators, community members, and so many others.

We invite you to come and share the many ways you have found inspiration and inspired others, so we can all learn and grow together. Some suggested connecting points:

  • What connects, motivates, and inspires you as an educator, artist, and human?
  • How do you create a classroom environment that invites your students to be curious and inspired?
  • What is the role of collaboration in inspiring creative solutions?
  • How can art teachers cultivate social and emotional health and a positive state of mind, even in challenging circumstances?
  • What artists/educators/leaders inspire you and, in turn, your students?
  • What resources can art teachers access to inspire themselves and their students?
  • How do you create a sense of acceptance and belonging, empowering students to use their own voice?
  • In what ways does immersion in your own artistic practice inform and inspire your work with students?
  • What technological platforms have inspired new out-of-the-box solutions?
