NYSATA 32nd Annual Summer Institute*
Saturday, July 29 to Friday, August 4, 2023 Sagamore National Historic Landmark, Raquette Lake, NY *Great Camp Sagamore’s policy is that all attendees must be vaccinated against COVID 19
The purpose of the NYSATA Summer Institute at Great Camp Sagamore is to provide opportunities for art educators to nurture their artistic practice and develop their capabilities as learners, makers, and educators.
The Adirondack State Park provides a perfect setting for a week of total immersion. Great Camp Sagamore offers educational tours, 20 miles of hiking trails, a private lake for swimming and canoeing, with many nearby museums and galleries. Sleeping accommodations are in beautiful authentic historic buildings. This national landmark, dating from 1897 and built by W. W. Durant, was the summer retreat of the Alfred G. Vanderbilt family for over 50 years. Buffet style meals are prepared by Sagamore’s chef and served in the paneled dining hall that overlooks Sagamore Lake.

Established in 2015, this scholarship honors an outstanding art educator, Barry Hopkins, art teacher in the Catskill Central School District for 37 years. Barry had a passion for teaching and for sharing his love for art from the Hudson River School and the Catskill Mountains region. Known for his connection to earth and nature, Barry taught his students to honor and celebrate the natural world through their art. An active and contributing NYSATA member for many years, he presented countless workshops, contributed to conference planning, and was a contributor to and participant in the NYSATA Summer Institute since its inception.
Barry’s contributions to the profession were cut short by his untimely death. He had a tremendous impact on the professional lives of many of our colleagues; especially those teachers who participated in the NYSATA Summer Institute, which he helped establish. His positive influence lives on through the many lives he touched and will continue to touch through this scholarship.
The Barry Hopkins Scholarship* provides financial support to enable a NYSATA member art educator who has never attended the NYSATA Summer Institute to attend at the Great Camp Sagamore. The scholarship covers registration fees, lodging, instruction, some materials, meals, and CTLE certificate.
*Thanks to Great Camp Sagamore's contribution of matching funds, a second scholarship of 50% tuition is awarded to a runner-up candidate.
**2 Additional $500 Scholarships will be available for new attendees for the 2023 institute, one of which is sponsored by Region 9 to support a Region 9 member.
Online Application open until January 15, 2023 Winners will be notified by February 1, 2023
