School Muralist

(repeated)

Joe Pimentel

Pimentel Murals

I will map out my artistic journey that began as a child with a love of comic books and ended with an exciting career making collaborative school murals that serve as a way to connect, inspire, and bring imaginations to life. Using a slideshow of images, I will reflect on my artistic influences and discuss the lasting impact of world travel and learning from other cultures. All of these experiences led me to an opportunity to paint my first mural and I have since embraced this as my primary act practice and have created a process that allows me to work with participants of all ages to make amazing, large scale works of art in one week’s time. Following my presentation, I will invite participants to take part in a collaborative mural workshop by providing a few wood cut-outs with outlined images for them to paint. Four participants at a time can utilize the paints and brushes I will provide to make their mark. They will be encouraged to tap into their imagination, experiment with color, line and pattern while enjoying the process of working together in a creative way.

ALL          50 min          Presentation          Limit: 20

AFTERNOON SESSIONS 1:00-3:50

Intaglio Printing with Tetra Pak Plates

Gina Palmer

Retired, Wappingers CSD

Upcycled and ecologically friendly, we will make plates made from tetra pak cartons to re-create an intaglio process. This experience eliminates expensive zinc or copper plates, etching with acid and technically challenging ventilation systems necessary in the professional printing making studio. This makes tetra pak printing a great process for the high school and higher education environments, allowing students to explore a traditional process with contemporary materials.

The materials to make a tetra pak print are simple. Scissors, X-acto knife, ballpoint pen (or other drypoint tools such as scribes and stippling tools, washable oil bases inks, tarlatan or cheese cloth, q-tips and a printing press or pasta maker.

Save and rinse those almond milk, bone broth and Pomi tomato cartons, (or any containers with a FOIL lining) add a few pointy tools to your bag and we will bring paper, ink, tarlatan and the press.

We will see a short video demonstration or two and spend the rest of the time with hands-on processes. You will bring a print or two home with you!
